“Every forest branch moves differently in the breeze but as they sway they connect at the roots.”—Jelaluddin Rumi from “Birdsong” and “The Essential Rumi”
I am taking a beginning screenprinting class at a local community college. Our first project was to make a paper stencil screen print using 2 colors. When I had to come up with several concepts I had a difficult time. So finally, I just randomly cut some paper in wiggly shapes. When I saw the shapes, I thought of the previous Sunday’s gospel reading with St. John the Baptist crying out in the wilderness to repent, as the kingdom of God is close at hand. The shapes looked to me like a plant who had been growing downwards for awhile, but turned around and headed upwards.
Repent > turn around > turn round right > give your life back to God > reunite.
Out of the suffering (the cross, the mud) comes insight to follow a different course of action to avoid repeating the same suffering, new growth, new life.
Reminding me of Psalm 23, that He leads me in paths of righteousness, yet even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for God is with me.

This sprouting leaf reminds me of the blessed assurance that
“Love bears all things,
Believes all things,
Hopes all things,
Endures all things.
Love never ends”
—1 Corinthians 13
“God is love” – 1 John 4:7

Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. Someone on my Facebook mentioned a word focus activity during lent, 2015 Lent Photo-A-Day. Today’s focus word is “Joy”.
These came to mind when I thought about “joy”:

At the pond,
I went out on a quest
I did see ~fleetingly~
hundreds of frogs hopping,
leaving water jewels on pads
evidence of their having been there
I asked them
if any would sit still
so I could take closer looks
but NONE would after much pleading
even though I told them I don’t eat frogs

“The spiritual aspirant’s greatest weapon is the sword of Truth.”
-Amma, from “Ammachi, the Biography”, p. 153
“God calls all of you to take the path of the inner truth- and that means taking responsibility for everything that’s in you: for what pleases you and for what you’re ashamed of, for the rich person inside you and for the poor one. Francis of Assisi called this, “loving the leper within us.” If you learn to love the poor one within you, you’ll discover that you have room to have compassion “outside” too, that there’s room in you for others, for those who are different from you, for the least among your brothers and sisters.” – Richard Rohr, “Simplicity”
