Buddha suggested there is a place, a home within yourself, a place where you can take refuge, a place where you can feel safe and happy. It is an inner kingdom, a refuge. You don’t have to travel far. It’s just a breath away. It is in the present moment.
“Jesus said, “If those who lead you say to you, ‘Look, the Kingdom is in the sky,’ then the birds of the sky will get there first. If they say, ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fish will get there first. Rather, the Kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the children of the living Father. “
—Thich Nhat Hanh, “Living Buddha, Living Christ”
Simplicity can be a place, a space to be free as the Shaker hymn goes:
‘”Tis the gift to be simple,
’tis the gift to be free
‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come ’round right.”
