About inheritance

inheritances

Seeing this plant age so gracefully inspired me with its elegant lines, uprightness, and gesture indicating it had sung many happy songs in the sun. This will surely affect the next generation, gifts to its children, as its ancestors influenced this one. I have observed this kind of plant in the spring during which it has a structure that looks star-like from which flowers sprout. All its blossoms spring from stars.

“Everything
we think,
feel, and do
has an effect
on our ancestors
and all future generations
and reverberates
throughout
the universe.”

—Thich Nhat Hanh

“Your body is not yours alone.
It belongs to your ancestors,
your parents,
future generations,
and to society
and all other living beings.
All of them have come together
to bring about the presence
of this body.
Keeping your body healthy
is an expression of gratitude
to the whole cosmos.
If you are healthy
physically and mentally,
all of us will benefit.”

—Thich Nhat Hanh, “Moments of Mindfulness”

Flower Rockets Celebrating Spring

I have been watching the wisteria over a period of 3 weeks or so. They have been in celebration ever since I saw a few spiraling clusters of what I thought would be leaves, but they turned out to be flowers.

What an explosion of blooms now. When I saw the first fuzzy baby leaves, I was so touched and reassured of the continuation of life, the circle of life.

I can feel happiness expanding when I stand near the fragrant wisteria plant. Oh how I love the color!

“When there’s new growth bursting out all over, everything fresh, green, and flourishing, the plants are little rockets of success going off every time you look at them.”

—Jacqueline Heriteau

Spring Sprouts

I found these new shoots very inspiring, and re-assuring that after the winter, after the bare tree has looked lifeless, new life is springing forth. It is a kind of an assurance that life goes on in the circle of life. It’s a continuation.

Breathing in, I breathe in fresh new life.
Breathing out, I feel renewed.

Breathing in, I see life continues.
Breathing out, I give thanks.

Breathing in, I know I have been given wings to fly.
Breathing out, my spirit soars.

I have two greeting cards made with a similar image, one without words, and one with words.

Light of Impermanence

[…There’s a way of training ourselves in order not to become the victim of fear and grief — that is to look deeply into ourselves and to see that we are made of non-self elements. And when we look around ourselves, we can recognize ourselves in the non-self elements, like a father looking at his children can see himself in his children, can see his continuation in his children. So he is not attached to the idea that his body is the only thing that is him. He’s more than his body. He is inside of his body but he is also at the same [time] outside of his body in many elements. And if we have the habit of looking like that, we will not be the victim of our attachment to one form of manifestation, and we will be free. And that freedom makes happiness and peace possible.”

-Thich Nhat Hanh
