Nourishing Rain

Oh how we still need the rain here in California!

I was sitting outside with a few others during a meditation. At first I was cold, but after I got a blanket to throw over part of me, I began to enjoy the peace of being outdoors, the calm generated by everyone meditating, and yet the cold drops awakening my skin.

“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.”—Langston Hughes

Last Night As I Was Sleeping

“Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt — marvelous error!—
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.

I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?

Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt — marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.

And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.

Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt — marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.

It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.

Last night, as I slept,
I dreamt — marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
here inside my heart.”

-Antonio Machado, translated by Robert Bly

Pilgrims towards the One

When I saw this nasturtium leaf , I immediately saw these drops of water as us, pilgrims, on our journey towards the One. It reminded me of Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr’s words: “The sacred space before the feast of Christmas is our womb time. It is a time of pregnancy and gestation.” The leaf is the sacred space and also the womb. These drops look very pregnant to me.

I am reminded of Rumi’s words “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.”
