“You are not separate from the whole. You are one with the sun, the earth, the air. You don’t have a life. You are life.”—Eckhart Tolle
“We often forget that the planet we are living on has given us all the elements that make up our bodies. The water in our flesh, our bones, and all the microscopic cells inside our bodies all come from the Earth and are part of the Earth. The Earth is not just the environment we live in. We are the Earth and we are always carrying her within us.
Realizing this, we can see that the Earth is truly alive. We are a living, breathing manifestation of this beautiful and generous planet. Knowing this, we can begin to transform our relationship to the Earth. We can begin to walk differently and to care for her differently. We will fall completely in love with the Earth. When we are in love with someone or something, there is no separation between ourselves and the person or thing we love. We do whatever we can for them and this brings us great joy and nourishment. That is the relationship each of us can have with the Earth. That is the relationship each of us must have with the Earth if the Earth is to survive, and if we are to survive as well.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh (Love Letter to the Earth)
“Quiet friend who has come so far,
feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower
and you the bell. As you ring,
what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
What is it like, such intensity of pain?
If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.
In this uncontainable night,
be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
the meaning discovered there.
And if the world has ceased to hear you,
say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water, speak: I am.”
–Rainer Maria Rilke, “Sonnets to Orpheus”
seasons of life
spring new life
may our loved ones who have passed on
blossom into happy peaceful lives again
for their contributions to our lives
may their lights burn brightly in our souls

“Earth brings us into life
And nourishes us.
Earth takes us back again.
Birth and death are present in every moment.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh
“It is God’s power that carries us through every moment. If we are aware of this, we will spontaneously be humble, our attitude towards the Almighty will be transformed into an attitude of worship, our focus on Him will blossom with our every step and we will be successful in our efforts.”
—Amma, “Awaken Children”
This was a video taken on New Year’s Eve a few years ago. Halved lemons were scooped and replaced with oil and a wick. We placed the lit oil lamps into the pond with prayers for peace and happiness.
“There is a light that shines beyond all things on earth, beyond us all, beyond the heavens, beyond the highest, the very highest heavens. This is the light that shines in our heart.”
“We can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord.”
—2 Corinthians 3:18, The Living Bible
“Swift As A Star Flicker
Prayer, it does ascend
Up from the mind into the air
Through the highest cumulus
In an orange dusky sky
And higher still, like a tailed comet
Out of earth’s realm of spiraling starlights
And into the black of space,
And higher still
Past a rare jeweled galaxy
With stars like sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds
Where a nebulous cloud, a violet mountain births
Explodes new stars forth
A factory place, a sandcastle of space
And higher still,
To the top of the highest universe-
That second sky
Swift as a star flicker
To God’s ear
An ear pressed close to the keyhole
Of that other Kingdom’s door
An ear so fine
That it can hear
Unspoken prayer clear
As a trumpet’s mighty blare
And God’s spirit reaches forth
To companion the soul

The space between Christmas and Epiphany is a special time. One year I attended almost nightly gatherings honoring Holy Nights at a Waldorf School. This is one song we sung:
