Be True to You

Something about the wildness of this flower really appealed to me. So free. Each hair did not have to be in place. Happy. Beautiful. Radiant. Free to be itself. Having faith.

John O’Donohue says it so eloquently in a “Blessing for a New Beginning”:

A Song

“All life has emptiness at its core; it is the quiet hollow reed through which the wind of God blows and makes the music that is our life.  Without that emptiness, we are clogged and unable to give birth to music, love, or kindness.  All creation springs from emptiness: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was without form, and void…”

-WayneMuller, “Sabbath, Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives”, p.51

Candle Light

“The teacher is like the candle which lights others in consuming itself.”—Giovanni Ruffini

“You should pray with love and devotion. Your hearts should melt as you pray. Tears are sometimes considered to be a weakness. But shedding tears for the vision of God is not a weakness at all. The brilliance of the candle increases as it melts down. Tears are an easy way to make the mind more expansive. Our tears wash away the impurities of the mind, and we gain strength from this.”—Amma, “Lead Us to Purity”, p. 12

Reflection Word: Beloved

Beloved: be-love

“Every time you listen with great attentiveness to the voice that calls you the Beloved, you will discover within yourself a desire to hear that voice longer and more deeply.”

—Henri J. M. Nouwen

“Sweep out the chambers of your heart.  Make it ready.  Make it ready to be the dwelling of the Beloved.  When you depart, love will enter.  In you, void of yourself, God will display Her beauty.”

– Sufi

Poor in Spirit

winter longing for the Light
so concentrated
it became so poor, empty of self
that the winter roots sprouted wings

“When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

—Matthew 5:1-3

Gift of Silence

“The true contemplative is not one who prepares his mind for a particular message that he wants or expects to hear, but is one who remains empty because he knows that he can never expect to anticipate the words that will transform his darkness into light.  He does not even anticipate a special kind of transformation.  He does not demand light instead of darkness.  He waits on the Word of God in silence, and, when he is “answered,” it is not so much by a word that bursts into his silence.  It is by his silence itself, suddenly, inexplicably revealing itself to him as a word of great power, full of the voice of God.”

—Thomas Merton, “Dialogue with Silence”, ed. Jonathan Motaldo

Autumn Dance

gingko leaves and wood spirit

“all of nature says “yes””
spring-summer-early fall, the leaves open to the light
collecting light for the tree
nourishing the trunk, the branches, me
collecting light for the roots
so when autumn and winter rains and cold comes
there is stored light in the roots
for the short days and long nights

Heart Space

heart-shaped spider web

I’ve never seen a spider web
with a heart space in the middle
of what a soul might desire
spaciousness
freedom
stillness
emptiness yet fullness
empty of preconceptions
emptiness
empty of what (a separate existence)
clear of clutter
room for Divine
space to breathe

Like a Loyal Dog Waiting for His Master

When I saw this stick next to the rippling waves, it reminded me of a dog waiting for his Master, or of someone witnessing thoughts and emotions.

just like our Faithful Friend
who watches our comings and goings
may we light up each thought with awareness
and trust that God, the Boatman,
is with us, guiding our way
