Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower

“Quiet friend who has come so far,
feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower
and you the bell. As you ring,

what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
What is it like, such intensity of pain?
If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.

In this uncontainable night,
be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
the meaning discovered there.

And if the world has ceased to hear you,
say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water, speak: I am.”

–Rainer Maria Rilke, “Sonnets to Orpheus”

Focus Word: Speak

As I watched this turtle, I imagined he was speaking:

“You, O Lord, are my lamp, my God who lightens my darkness. With you I can break through any barrier, with my God I can scale any wall. As for God, his ways are perfect; the word of the Lord, purest gold. He indeed is the shield of all who make him their refuge. For who is God but the Lord? Who is a rock but our God? The God who girds me with strength and makes the path safe before me.”

-Psalm 18: 29-33

“For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock. .”

—Psalm 27:5

Like a Loyal Dog Waiting for His Master

When I saw this stick next to the rippling waves, it reminded me of a dog waiting for his Master, or of someone witnessing thoughts and emotions.

just like our Faithful Friend
who watches our comings and goings
may we light up each thought with awareness
and trust that God, the Boatman,
is with us, guiding our way

Embraced

“We are loved by an unending love. We are embraced by arms that find us even when we are too proud for soothing. We are counseled by voices that guide us even when we are too embittered to hear. We are loved by an unending love. We are supported by hands that uplift us even in the midst of a fall. We are urged on by eyes that meet us even when we are too weak for meeting. We are loved by an unending love. Embraced, touched, soothed, ours are the arms, the fingers, the voices; ours are the hands, the eyes, the smiles; we are loved by an unending love.”

Wash Away Your Worries

Wash Away Worries

I love the sound and rhythm of the ocean.

When I was at the beach one day, I wanted to make a visual and kinesthetic prayer. So I composed a prayer in my mind. Got a stick. Got my feet wet. Wrote my prayer. And smiled at the whole experience of the dissolving words. Even my footprints disappeared.
