Welcoming Smiling Flowers

“A smile is the universal welcome.”—Max Eastman

“Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. Let’s not be afraid to receive each day’s surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy.  It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.”—Henri Nouwen

Washing, Blessing and Anointing

When I was in New Mexico one summer, I saw a shape in the rocks that reminded me of Jesus washing and blessing his disciple’s feet, an anointing of a sort. In his example, we are encouraged to serve others.

In a recent gospel reading (John 12:1-11), Mary anoints Jesus with costly perfume and nard. St. Scholastica Retreat Center (on Facebook) posted this:

“Look around you today to see what needs your anointing. You can anoint with a glance of love, a smile, a word, an embrace, a piece of affirmation, or, of course, with oil. Pour out your love today in some kind of anointing.”

“The world will change because of your smile…To sit, to smile, to look at things and really see them—these form the basis of peace work.”—Thich Nhat Hanh

Autumn Equinox Ritual

labyrinth

Yesterday, there was an autumn equinox ritual celebrated at the MA Center in San Ramon, California. Lakshmi Collins led us in body prayers invoking the Spirit and qualities of the four directions. We sang, meditated, walked the labyrinth, chanted for peace as we imagined soft white flower petals falling gently upon parts of the earth that need it most. We made the intention of letting go of what does not serve us anymore.
