Waves

“The one factor which connects a human being to Nature is the innate innocence within man. When we see a rainbow, or the waves of the ocean, do we still feel the innocent joy of a child? An adult who experiences a rainbow as being nothing but light waves will not know the joy and wonder of a child who sees a rainbow, or a child who is watching the waves of the ocean.”

—Amma, “Man and Nature”, p10

“The whole world is pulsing with the power of God…wave after wave of bliss. Your heart is like the shore, and the Ocean of Infinite Love is breaking on the shores of your heart.”

—Paramahansa Yogananda

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”

—Henry David Thoreau

Divine Providence

Divine Mother’s gaze
how kind!

Do we know?
Her arms encircle us fully
stillness gives clarity
feeds us, nourishes us
with a kind of water
from the deepest
clearest well

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

—Matthew 7:7-12, Bible, New International Version

It Takes A Universe

The child awakens to a universe.
The mind of the child to a world of wonder
Imagination to a world of beauty
Emotions to a world of intimacy.

It takes a universe to make a child
both in outer form and inner spirit.
It takes a universe to educate a child.
It takes a universe to fulfill a child.”

©Fr. Thomas Berry, quoted in “Sacred Journey”, Autumn 2009, vol. 60, no. 4

“Earth brings us into life
And nourishes us.
Earth takes us back again.
Birth and death are present in every moment.”

©Thich Nhat Hanh

“Every particle of the world is a mirror. In each atom blazes forth the light of a thousand suns. Open the heart of a raindrop and you will find a hundred oceans. In a grain of sand lies the seed of a thousand beings.”

—Mahmud Shabistari, Medieval Sufi poet

“Life is like a garden. Quite naturally, leaves wither and flowers fade. Only if we clear the decay of the past then and there can we really enjoy the beauty of the new leaves and flowers. Likewise, we must clear the murkiness of past bad experiences from our minds. Life is remembrance in forgetfulness. Forgive what ought to be forgiven: forget what ought to be forgotten. Let us embrace life with renewed vigor.”

—Amma

Expressions of Tenderness

“We can learn from nature
the art of praising God
without words…

Go outside…
Stand beside something that is already praising God.
Let the sacredness of that prayer seep into your being.
All that is drawn to God is drawing you with it.”

Take Off Your Shoes

“Taking off your shoes is a sacred ritual.  It is a hallowed moment of remembering the goodness of space and time. It is a way of celebrating the holy ground on which you stand.  If you want to be a child of wonder, cherish the truth that time and space are holy.  Whether you take your shoes off symbolically or literally matters little.  What is important is that you are alive to the holy ground on which you stand and to the holy ground that you are.”

—Macrina Wiederkehr, “Seasons of Your Heart”

Antiphon for Autumn

“O GLEANER OF GARDENS AND FIELDS,

Come! Come gather what is most precious in us.
Urge us to embrace our cornucopia of goodness.
Stir up gratitude and a sense of wonder.
Move us to give freely of our abundant harvest.
O Come!”

from the book “The Circle of Life” by Joyce Rupp & Macrina Wiederkehr, Ave Maria Press

In the Spaces

“What I see in Nature is a magnificent structure that we can comprehend only very imperfectly, and that must fill a thinking person with a feeling of humility. This is a genuinely religious feeling that has nothing to do with mysticism”

—Albert Einstein

There’s a Child Within

“Children will help you smile from your heart and to have that look of wonderment in your eyes. There is a child within everyone. The innocence and the playfulness of a child exists in all human beings. Somewhere in each one of us, a child’s joy, innocence, and faith lie dormant. We delight in searching for the child within. When we were children, we had no worries or problems; recalling these days with love, we want to return to them. This desire is felt by all living beings. The wonder and the love that ;you felt as a child will never return unless you can again play like a child. Innocence is within you, hidden deep inside. You have to rediscover it.”

—Amma, Awaken Children, Vol. 6
